I have googled this topic over and over and over searching for an article that offered me truthful advice about whether an agent or manager is the best option for an actor just starting out. I got nothing. There is no good article about this topic.
So, I will offer my personal advice and experiences with agents and managers in the short time that I have been acting.
Over the past 5 months I have emailed probably 20 different agents, 15 times or more. And no reply. Not one. This could be discouraging. But for someone with an enlarged ego I totally get it, my email just got lost in the Cloud. It is frustrating though, to not even get a reply of, "Screw you! We have enough actors in Hollywood!" But oh well.
Now for managers, I have only been in contact with 3. And all of them have emailed me back. 2 of those emails were rejections! But they thanked me for reaching out to them. Even though they were not interested.
So I guess my theory is that, managers have smaller rosters and are therefore more open to reading new talents emails, and taking a chance on a new actor. A managers job is to pitch you and be more involved with you. Even though it is more beneficial to have one when you have gotten more work, because they generally charge more, a manager could be beneficial to the new actor trying to get their foot in the door. Every single actor that I know, has told me that they got their agent because their manager got them meetings.
So for now, I have stopped sending agents countless emails, and have moved on to managers! I'm sure the agents have appreciated the little break I'm giving them. But don't worry agents! My manager is going to come back and annoy you some more, for me!
