Don't let Nick fool you.... he has been DYING to be included in a Youtube video! Check out this glam holiday look! :)
So for this post today, I am going to be taking a different turn than my usual posts, but for good reason! For my English 1B class, we were assigned a project to come up with a new public transportation plan for Riverside County.
How many days a week do you ride the bus? How many days a year do you ride the bus? I'm guessing the number is pretty low. Here in the U.S., but to be more specific, Riverside County, the public transportation is improving, but not enough for people to replace their gas cards with bus cards. When people think of public transportation the first words that pop into their heads are usually words like, "smelly, sketchy, and inconvenient," with those words in mind, I don't want to step near a bus station or metro station around here! Now acknowledging that we are college students and couldn't possibly propose a plausible plan for all of Riverside County, we thought of something more small scale. A line of buses that transport students to and from all of RCC's campuses. That would be three total campuses: Moreno Valley, Norco, and Riverside. A lot of students stray away from taking classes at multiple campuses because of the inconvenience of the drive between campuses. But, if there was a bus that allowed you to drop your car off at one campus, and then take the bus to another, and back, most students are on board! When surveying for this, a lot of students exclaimed, "Is this a real thing? That would be awesome!" and, "Too bad this isn't real, I would totally use it,". Allowing students reliable transportation that is only for them to and from multiple classes comes with many benefits. No random sketchy people, one easy route to follow, time to focus on their studies while riding the bus, and the freedom to take more classes, resulting in faster completion of their AA, or general education. One major problem with Riverside County's maps, is that they are almost impossible to read and follow. I almost always resort to my phone when I can't figure it out. Something that blew my mind, was that when I was in Europe, a complete foreign country, I was able to navigate an underground metro map for not only the UK (A country that speaks English), but for Paris, Germany, and the Netherlands! I was able to navigate where I needed to go without my phone in a place that didn't even speak my language! I found that alarming. What we can improve, are simple instructions for navigation. For example, in London, all you need to know is, 1. The direction you're going in, 2. The street you need off of, and 3. If you need to switch lines. Even switching lines was easy, because it was all color coated. Problems that arise from our proposal are obviously, funding. We decided that these buses offer company's more ad space, like cellular companies. They can equip the buses with wifi, to show the students how great their network is. We are hoping to get some funding from the city as we propose that these buses will provide new steady jobs, and a decreased carbon footprint from all of the students using the buses. This plan is far from perfect, but any improvement in our public transportation system is needed. How great would it be if our buses, metro, and trains all worked together? So that you would no longer need to take the 91 from Riverside to LA every morning on your commute. You could take the metro and nap! As you all know, I have recently become a social media fiend! But it's for a good reason, I promise. I decided to do the "New Youtuber Tag!" Basically just talking about myself. Give it a watch :) Subscribe to my channel @Chelsea Gray |
